1. The camera would need to go through Home Office–type approval before it could be put to work on the roads here, but this process could take less than a year.

2. Multiple sets of the cameras are installed on stretches of road to make ‘enforcement zones‘. But under Home Office ‘type approval‘ rules, each individual set cannot be linked to any of the others.

3. The Segway HT‘s problem is that in this country motorised devices should be listed on the registers of the Finnish Vehicle Administration (AKE). The Segway cannot be legally registered, since it currently lacks EU type–approval, and getting such a thing is a tricky exercise.

4. Some trials are expected to begin in 200'. Setting out how cars could be charged according to their pollution levels – as well as when and where they travel – the guidance says: ‘The department is keen to ensure that where any differentiation is applied it is done in a consistent way. ‘Where possible, this should be based on vehicle tailpipe emissions data obtained through the EC (European Commission) type approval process.‘ But it adds ominously: ‘Where vehicle tailpipe emissions data are not readily available, local authorities may wish to consider alternative means of identifying or approximating emissions performance.‘ Meanwhile, the small print of other legislation shows how motorists who fall foul of road–pricing rules could be in big trouble.
